Heartless (La Belle Dame Sans Merci Revisited)
Oh child, you call me heartless
I’m sorry, but you’re right
And if you’d care to listen
Then I could tell you why
It all began on a bright summer’s day
I was walking in a meadow going my way
And then I saw a maid sitting on the ground
And crying bitterly with no-one around
''Oh tell me, fair maiden
Why are you crying sitting here?''
She told me all her friends have left her
And no-one stayed to play with her
I said that I’d be glad to stay
If it could make her happy again
She smiled through her tears, like sunshine through the rain
And my heart leapt with joy - right into her hands
My heart she made her plaything
Her little ball of ruby red
She pressed it to her own sweet bosom
And kissed and fondled and caressed
But then she grew tired with this old heart
And she dropped it to the ground
It turned out to be a fragile kind of heart
And it shattered into a thousand parts
Oh how it made my heart bleed
How could she do this thing to me
But I lacked heart to tell her
And wept most broken-heartedly
She stroked my hair, she said ''I like you,
I’ll keep the pieces to remind me of you
And in my silk purse forever they’ll stay''
And having spoken, she left me and went away
So child, don’t call me heartless
Because it’s true...
